SODA (3)

(Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama)

  • During an extreme cold, leave on the indoor faucets that are located on the exterior walls dripping to prevent pipe freezing, or leave the sink furthest from the water heater on.

  • Make sure to insulate exterior water service lines during a hard freeze.

  • Remove ice buildup, snow, or any debris from roof when needed to prevent leaking. *(AL Only)

*This checklist covers basic necessary maintenance items for most homes. It is by no means all-inclusive. Some items may not be applicable for the type off home and home features you have. For full details, please consult all guides, warranties, and literature provided by DSLD Homes, as well as the specific warranties and manuals for your home’s appliances.

5 Meaningful Resolutions You Can Stick To

Categories: DSLD Homes, Events, Holidays, Life in Your DSLD Home | Posted: January 2, 2017 | No Comments »

resolutions-final

Happy New Year, everyone! The fireworks have settled, the champagne is gone, the balloons have popped, and it’s back to the grindstone this Monday. The resolution season is in full swing as we begin 2017 and you’re inevitably dreading February when your resolutions still haven’t stuck. Instead of setting the usual “eat healthier, work out more, worry less” ambitious goals, consider incorporating these meaningful habits into your new lifestyle this year.

friends-family

1. Spend more time with family and friends.

Take some time out of your busy day to connect with the people around you and make family time a priority. Play a game together or go on a walk around your community. Reconnect with old friends. Go through your address book (or Facebook friends) and reconnect with friends you’ve lost touch with. Meet your neighbors and form new friendships. DSLD’s communities often host community events where you can get to know your neighbors. Keep up with events in your community by following us on Facebook. Find your state (LA | MS | AL | FL)

be-present

2. Be present.

Put away those devices and step away from the remote. Disconnect from technology for a minute and be fully engaged with the world around you. Live in the moment! Take in nature by going on a walk or hike in your area.  (Many of DSLD’s communities feature walking paths and nature trails!) For more ideas on how to be present in every moment, check out this article from Bustle.

3. Simplify your life.

Organize and sift through household items, clothes, shoes, and toys you can sell or donate. De-clutter each room in your home and only keep things you truly need and use regularly. For more tips and inspiration to get you motivated, read “Living the Simple Life” by Elaine St. James. If you need more motivation, here’s a video on 10 things you can get rid of NOW to get started!

decompress-3

4. Decompress.

Take some time for yourself more often. The busyness of life can sometimes overshadow our own personal aspirations. Travel to the places you’ve been wanting to explore. Discover a new hobby or passion you’ve been wanting to pursue. Refocus on your goals and write them down on paper. Research shows that people who put their goals in writing are more likely to achieve them! Check out this article from Forbes for more tips on goal-setting.

grateful-1

5. Be grateful.

Between our jobs, families, friends, projects, and hobbies, it can be easy for us to take the things we have for granted. Start each day by verbalizing one thing you are thankful for. According to the Harvard Medical School, adopting an attitude of gratitude makes people feel all-around happier and more fulfilled!

Let us know what your resolutions are in the comments!

Hunstville Area

November 24th – January 1st – Skating in the Park

  • Location: behind the Huntsville Museum of Art
  • Is there anything quite as magical as an outdoor ice skating rink in winter? Every year, right around Thanksgiving, Skating in the Park opens right behind the Huntsville Museum of Art. You’ll find children and adults gliding along the ice in the picturesque area adjacent to Big Spring International Park until the skating rink closes just after New Year’s Day. Visitors can rent skates (in case you don’t own your own) and scooters to assist those that aren’t so “light on their feet.” You can also purchase light refreshments on site or walk to any of the nearby restaurants downtown if you want to make the most of your trip to the area. Whether you’re looking to kick off the holiday season or end it on a high note, Skating in the Park is a perfect option!

*November 25th – December 23rd – Santa’s Village

  • Location: Alabama Constitution Village, downtown Huntsville
  • Santa’s Village may be the only place to see snow in Huntsville during the holiday season! But more importantly, it’s a great way to make a visit with Santa into an enjoyable and memorable event for the whole family. From the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas “Eve Eve” (December 23rd), Alabama Constitution Village in downtown Huntsville transforms into a winter wonderland where families can: visit with Santa Claus (and get a free photo opportunity!), see live reindeer, decorate a cookie in Mrs. Claus’ kitchen (she also reads stories), run through an “ice maze”, watch local groups’ Christmas-themed performances, make your own ornament.

November 23rd – January 1st – Galaxy of Lights

  • Location: Huntsville Botanical Garden
  • The Huntsville Botanical Garden creates a “holiday light extravaganza” with its Galaxy of Lights every winter. You’ll see Huntsville’s ingenuity on display through animated light displays, from Santa Claus with a rocket to a twinkling icicle forest, traditional holiday scenes or nursery rhyme characters. This annual event opens with the walking weekend strolls (including some dog friendly nights!) that begin a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving. Then the Galaxy of Lights opens for cars, which can drive through the path nightly from Thanksgiving into the New Year. The Galaxy of Lights is constantly touted by travel writers and group tours as a top sight to experience.

December 1st – Huntsville Christmas Parade
